The Redemptoris Mater Semainary in Denver is one of approximately 75 Redemptoris Mater Seminaries around the world. The first Redemptrois Mater Semianry was founded in Rome in 1988under the patronage of Pope John Paul II. The Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Denver was begun in 1996 by Archbishop Stafford and was Confirmed in 1998 by Archbishop Chaput.
The Redemptoris Mater Seminaries are closely tied to the Neocatechumenal Way, an movement of Small Faith Communities that are focused on the New Evangelization and Adult Faith formation. The Seminarians any of the Redemptoris Mater Seminaries come from these Small Faith Communities. If a member of the Neocatechumenal way discerns that they have a Vocation to the Priesthood they communicate this calling up to the leadership of the Way who then assign them to a Diocese. The Redemptoris Mater Seminary has Seminarians from the Archdiocese of Denver as well as the Diocese of Pueblo and Dallas.
Seminarians at Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Denver take the full course of classes with the Seminarians who are attending St. John Vianney Seminary. In addition to the course work the Redemptoris Mater Seminarians sever a two or three year itinerancy in which they will live in a community, often one in which Catholics are in a minority, and minister to the members of the community and live their faith. When the Seminarians have completed their course of study and Mission they will be ordained into the Diocese to which they have been assigned. To date 15 Seminarians have been ordained into the Archdiocese of Denver, 12 are serving in Parishes in Denver, one is on Mission in South Africa and two have gone on to further Theological Studies.
All of the Seminarians live together on the grounds of the John Paul II Center. The Seminarians have a wonderful evening Mass and meal, which they have invited the Knights of Columbus to attend on several occasions. These Seminarians truly arrive with all of their worldly possessions in their suitcase and they usually thousands of miles away from Friends and Family as they progress through their formation.
