The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney. The primary purpose of the Knights was to provide support for the widows and orphans of the members of the Knights of anything happened to them. From the very beginning, however, the Knights had has a strong commitment to support of the Roman Catholic Church and her Priests. One way that this support is shown today is through the Knights of Columbus support for Seminarians.

Support for Seminarians comes in a variety of forms. The most obvious is financial support, the Supreme Council's RSVP program encourages councils to support seminarians and partially reimburses Councils that attain a certain level of financial support. This financial support often goes to the purchase of text books, allows Seminarian studying out of state to return home to visit their families, or provides resources that are used to purchase Vestments or a Chalice

Additionally, support for individual Seminarians may also include: inviting them to take their First Degree and Join the Council, Attend Council Activities, or cards, letters or e-mails expressing the councils support during finals.

Finally, the Vocations offices of the Dioceses are often in need of financial or manpower assistance as they are running programs to assist young men discern if they have a vocation
